Picture Poem~ 'Little Girl in Pink'

Here's my picture poem! Who's the girl in pink? It's kind of obvious... Sorry if the formatting is not done correctly or perfectly, Blogger doesn't allow tabs. The original format was no indent on the first line, 1 indent on the second line, and two indents on the third.

I see a girl in pink who,
with all her heart loves
her dad.
I see a girl in pink who,
sleeps in her crib
with her mobile above her.
I see a girl in pink  who,
sits in front of the TV
watching Sesame Street.
I see  girl in pink  who,
cries for her dad,
when she fears a monster is under her bed.
I see a girl in pink who,
sits on the floor of her bedroom
playing with barbies and polly pockets.
I see a girl in pink who,
waits by the door with her backpack
ready for the first day of kindergarten.
I see a girl in pink who,
stands flamboyantly on stage smiling big and proud
ready to graduate.
I see a girl in pink who,
glares at her dad after he takes
a billion pictures of her before prom.
I see a girl in pink who,
has luggage packed and ready to go
as she heads off to college.
I see a girl in pink who,
sits in her office
with certificates plastered on the walls behind her.
I see a girl in pink who,
has gone bridezilla
the day before her wedding.
I see a girl in pink who,
sits in her own child’s nursery
rubbing her own swollen stomach.
I see a girl in pink who,
sheds a tear
after holding her child for the first time.
I see all of this,
playing in my head
by looking at this little baby girl,
in pink.
But, just for now,
let’s stick with the girl in pink who,
loves her dad with all her heart.

Weekly Blog Mon. Feb. 23rd 2015 "Hucklyberry Finn" by: Mark Twain

Prompt: Draw 4 objects that represent your reading. Write a sentence for each, telling
what each item says about what you’ve been reading.

Pages Read: 0-238 FINISH

*May contain spoilers*

The first picture I chose, was a picture of the man who played Tom Robinson in TKAM. I chose this picture because, it reminds me of Jim the slave who runs away with Huck. Jim reminds me of Tom because, both author's (Twain and Lee) describe them as tall, strong, black men. They both work hard in their lives, and are both accused of doing things they never did. In Tom's case, it would be raping Mayella. In Jim's case, it would be killing Huck.

The second picture I chose, is a picture of Violet from The Series of Unfortunate Events. I chose a picture of Violet because, in the book Huck has to go into town dressed like a girl. He has to do this because, he ran away from his father's cabin. He was kidnapped by his father and he was forced to live in a small cabin. Before he ran away, he killed a pig and put blood all over an ax that was smashed into the door. Then he smeared blood on the cabin floor, to look like someone killed him. The whole town went crazy and they thought Jim killed him. Anyways, (off topic there), he had to go into town to buy supplies for him and Jim. However, he couldn't go looking like himself because, people would find him and give him back to his dad.

The third picture is a picture of gold coins because, Huck and his best friend Tom Sawyer found twelve thousand dollars in gold coins. They brought it to the judge and he told them it was from robbers. Since there was no rightful owner, the judge split the money equally between the two boys. Each of them getting six thousand a piece. Since Huck were still young, the judge was in charge of Huck's money. He gave Huck one dollar a day, but Huck later gives all the money to the Judge.

The fourth picture is a picture of a cartoon thief. I chose a picture of a thief because, while Huck and Jim come to shore, Huck meets two men. One claims to be a duke and the other claims to be a king; when, really they are just phonies and thieves. They trick people by putting on shows and the show is just the Duke dancing. They end up making a lot of money and leaving the island. After that, they meet a little boy who's brother died and he was on his way to visit his other brothers in England. The king and duke drill the boy for details, then they sail the boy to his boat he is to board. When they drop the boy off, they make Huck and Jim sail them to the boy's deceased brother's house. They pose as the brothers from England and steal the money from the deceased man and his children.

Global Collaboration Project Reflection

My global awareness level was somewhat high and low. I knew some events that were happening in the world, but I didn't know everything. I mean, I really didn't look into what's happening by myself. After entering the 7th grade, I learned more of what was going on throughout the world. I learned more by having AoWs in language arts and social studies.

After viewing the projects our pen pals have created, I learned that our schools are very different, and similar. As I learned in India they have three different houses- Shivalik, Nilgiri, Himilaya. At our school, we have A and B teams. Instead of teams and houses, in Sweden they have sections- Red, Yellow, and Orange. A similarity between our schools is, we have sports. The three schools all play basketball and soccer. Another difference in our school's is Sweden has wood work and needlework in their school. They also have recess twice a day.

My perspective changed after our project because, I now know that not everyone is like us. All around the world there are different sports, hobbies, customs, and traditions. Like in Sweden, they take off their shoes during school. If we did that at Heritage, the school would probably smell! Sweden was a lot more different than us, I expected them to be like us except with accents!

The most interesting thing I learned so far was that our Swedish pen-pals have needlework. I thought this was interesting because, a lot of schools don't have that. A shocking thing I learned was they have breaks to go outside twice a day (Sweden). I think that was shocking because, I didn't think any middle school did that or at the least have a playground!

"Heat" Mon. 16th Feb. 2015

Prompt:  Differentiate between the main character and your favorite teacher.

Pages: 203-220 BOOK FINISHED

Author: Mike Lupica

Book: Heat

I GOT ALL PICTURES FROM IRVING ELEMENTARY'S ECHALK PAGE AND FROM GOOGLE. DO NOT THINK I AM A STALKER OR SOMETHING PLEASE. :)

To make this blog longer I am going to pick two favorite teachers and two main characters. The first will obviously be Michael, and the teacher I will compare and differentiate will be Mr. Joseph. (If you weren't here last year, which I am pretty sure everyone was, he was the gym teacher). Mr. Joseph and Michael are kind of alike, they both played sports. Also, they both were active (which goes along with the sports part). Michael is a funny character, but can easily turn serious just like Mr. Joseph is. Michael has been through a hard time and had the feeling of loss, like Mr. Joseph.

The difference between Michael and Mr. Joseph would be the age. Michael is 12 years old (which took forever for him to prove) and Mr. Joseph is around (my best guess) early 30's or mid 30's. Also, another difference would be Michael lives in New York, Mr. Joseph lives in Illinois. Those are just the obvious. I always remember Mr. Joseph talking about wrestling and him talking about how he coaches it. On the other hand, Michael is always talking about baseball.

Another character I am going to talk about is Ellie, and I am going to compare her to my 3rd grade reading teacher, Mrs. McDonald. Some similarities between these two people are they are both fast runners. Michael says "she ran fast for a girl, for anybody..."(page 26). The narrator also says "Michael and Manny nearly having to run to keep up with her." These two sentences are describing Ellie as a fast runner  or at the most a runner. Our fifth grade/3rd grade/1st grade teacher is a runner and does marathons which is similar to Ellie: they both run. The narrator also says Ellie has brown hair and brown eyes as well as Mrs. McDonald.

A difference would be age, Ellie just turned 12 years old and Mrs. McDonald just turned 30 (she thought her life was over haha). Another difference would be Ellie plays baseball and Mrs. McDonald is a runner, (although baseball and running go hand in hand-kind of-). Another difference would be they live in different states, since the book takes place in New York Ellie lives there. Mrs. McDonald lives in Illinois.

Related Questions: What teacher reminds you of a main character in your book?
Kind of related question: Who's your favorite teachers? (Since the prompt has to do with favorite teachers)

Poetry Reflection ~ O Captain! My Captain!

Prompt: Based on the poems you researched last week, choose one of the poems to write about in your  Poetry response. You may draw or find a graphic for your visualization, but make sure to explain your rationale for what you choose.

Poem: O Captain! My Captain!

Author: Walt Whitman

In the spirit of President's day I chose the poem "O Captain! My Captain!" This poem is about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. Many lines refer to President Lincoln like; "O Captain! My Captain! Rise up!" Whitman can't believe Abraham Lincoln died, and is telling him to rise, the trumpets are ringing for you! "Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head! It is some dream that on the deck, You’ve fallen cold and dead." Whitman is referring to Lincoln's assassination, Walt is trying to picture Lincoln's death.

I think Walt Whitman wrote this poem because, he was born in the 1819 and died in 1892. The  Civil War was taking place from 1861-1865. He was alive during the war and looked up to Lincoln. I think since he was alive during the war, he experienced it secondhand (firsthand being people in the war). He also (like I said before) looked up to Lincoln, so if your role model is killed your going to want to do something to remember them.

This poem (to be honest) reminds me of that one Full House episode, when Jesse is going back to school. In the episode, Jesse has to read the poem "O Captain! My Captain!" and he has to explain it. Well, Jesse never really looked deeply into the poem, he just thought it was about a captain. That's what it really reminded me of, but it also reminded me of remembering important leaders. Not just Abe Lincoln, but also other important leaders who were "captains of the boats". Like Mother Theresa and Muhammad Ghandi.

Blog for Mon. Feb. 9th "Heat" By Mike Lupica

Prompt: Pick a celebrity, family member, or a friend to describe a 3 main characters in the book.

Book: Heat

By: Mike Lupica

Pages Read: 0-123

The celebrity that I chose would be Jake T. Austin to play Michael. I chose this celebrity to play him because Jake T. Austin is tall, skinny, and has long arms just like Michael. I also picked him because I pictured Michael with curly hair and the celebrity has curly hair too. When I hear about Michael lying to the children social services it reminds me when Jake T. Austin was acting "Hotel For Dogs". It reminded me of him because the character he plays in the movie is always lying to "official people" like Michael.

The celebrity I chose to play Uncle Timo is Adam Sandler because Uncle Timo sounds funny ( he was just introduced). According to Michael, Uncle Timo looks like he needs to shave and sometimes thats how Adam Sandler looks. Manny describes his Uncle as if he is a really, really good actor, Adam Sandler is a really, really good actor.

The next celebrity I am going to use to describe a character is Rowan Blancher to portray Ellie Garcia. I would describe Ellie as Rowan because she has long dark hair and big eyes just like this celebrity. Michael describes her as the most beautiful girl he ever seen, just like Rowan, she is very pretty. Unlike the person I chose to play Michael, Rowan actually is close to the age that Ellie is. Ellie just turned 12 and Rowan just turned 13, so they are pretty close in age. Ellie lives in the richer part of the Bronx which shows she is a lot richer than Manny and Michael. Rowan is also rich because she is an actor and a singer.

The last character I am going to describe out of the book is Manny. Instead of using a celebrity, I am using a family member. The family member I am going to use to describe Manny is my cousin Juice. I am going to use my cousin Juice because like Manny he is really funny and he plays baseball. Manny also seems a little more caring inside the book because he is always looking out for his best friend (Michael). He also wants to make sure Michael  and his brother Carlos do not get separated. My cousin is like Manny because he also looks after his sister very protective and he is caring.

Book Talk: "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" Mon. Feb. 2, 2015

Transcript:

Hi My name is Mia and I have just finished the book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Luis Stevenson. The genre of this book is traditional literature and science fiction. The book takes place in London, England, and the main characters are Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, Mr. Utterson, Richard, Lanyon, and Poole. In the book, Dr. Jekyll is a commonly well known doctor. He does charity work and is always experimenting or taking a walk outside. A week later however, Jekyll is found confiding himself to his room, not daring to come outside. Mr. Utterson and Richard walked passed Dr. Jekyll’s house and were talking to him through the window, when suddenly Jekyll runs out of eyesight. This is just one of the mysteries throughout the book.

The complete opposite of Jekyll is Mr. Hyde, a villainous man who has no morals, no conscious, and no feelings. The only thing he does is evil. When Hyde is mysteriously an owner of a key that leads to Jekyll’s laboratory filled with expensive equipment, Mr. Utterson gets suspicious. He investigates further on Mr. Hyde and finds out that he committed a crime of killing. When Dr. Jekyll suddenly goes missing, Mr. Utterson and Poole go to search his house for him. Instead of finding the doctor, they find the evil bona fide Mr. Hyde…. the mood of this book is mysterious and eery because of all the mysteries in the book and the creepiness of Mr. Hyde.

I liked this book because, it was entreating and very incomprehensible. I also liked this book because, I liked the way Utterson found out that Hyde was a criminal and evil mastermind. I liked this because, it gave Utterson clues as to where to look. I would recommend this book to my cousin Juice because, he likes to read mysterious novels. Thank you:)

01/30/2015 Gallery Walk

Prompt:  reflect upon your impressions of what you have learned from the array of articles

Today we did a gallery walk in class. I was informed about many topics including ISIS, Ebola, child trafficking, drones, etc. The three AoW's that caught my attention was Jeremiah's article which was about *child trafficking, Diana's/Lillian's which was about Cancer, and Saul's which was about ISIS' attack on Japan. My reaction to hearing about Jeremiah's AoW was kind of like "I knew this existed, I didn't know how far it has gotten." I knew that there was child trafficking, and I knew that people sell children just to make money. However, I didn't know how common it is, or how long this has been going on. My personal reaction to this would be like why would you do this inhumane thing?

My reaction towards Diana's and Lillian's article (which was about a new Cancer treatment). This new Cancer treatment uses laser or beams to destroy the Cancer cells. I thought this was a good treatment because, unlike Chemo, it does not attack healthy cells and tissues. It only attacks the bad or unhealthy tissue. I feel like this is a treatment that can help a lot of people, except it only works on some Cancers. I think if they worked this treatment out and fixed out the things they need to fix it would be perfect. I also thought the price was outrageous, but I can understand why. I mean, this laser treatment must cost a lot to make and to perform on a person.

Saul's article was about ISIS/ISIL taking two Japanese men as hostages. Not only taking them as hostages, but taking a picture of one of the hostage's named Kenji holding the other hostage's named Haruna's body which appeared to be dead. I was shocked at this news. I mean, ISIS is not new to me, I know they exist and all, but this was kind of disturbing.
